Ideas for a promotion package for the release of an album
1. A promotion
package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together
with two
of the following three options:
–a
website homepage for the band
–a digipak for
the album’s release
–a
magazine advertisement for the digipak.
Radiohead - Daydreaming
This is a music video that I would like to take inspiration from. I like its use of tracking shots and the surreal element of walking through doors and ending up in different locations. This video is mainly based upon symbolism, as it is called daydreaming and the use of the lead singer walking through several locations creates a sense of being lost, as if you are in a dream sequence.
I like the use of narrative in this video, as it shows a bank heist and uses some shots out of the chronological order of events. It also incorporates surreal elements, by using the guitars as guns and having the money they were robbing be music sheets. This video is mainly a narrative based video.
Alice In Chains - Man in the Box (Official Video)
This video is a performance based video. It is of a heavy metal genre, therefore incorporates lots of conventions associated with the genre. For example, the video is performance based, which is typical of the genre. Also, the footage has been colour treated to have a sepia colour palate, creating a dark mood. It also includes imagery that creates connotations of death and being isolated. In the video there are several shots of lead singer Layne Staley singing while leaning against the inner walls of a chicken wire cage. This video also incorporates elements of spectacle, as in the chorus, there is a close up shot of Staley as he sings and looks directly into the camera, therefore directly addressing the audience.

I chose a music video before as it is something that greatly differs from my AS main task. My AS task was to create a film opening, and I feel that creating a film trailer would be a similar task with similar shooting session to creating a film opening, which is why I decided against it. I decided against creating an advert as I feel that it would limit my options of what style of video I would like to make. While an advert has to inform the audience about the product or service it is advertising, with a music video I can choosing between filming a live band performance, making my own narrative within the video or drawing upon themes related to the lyrics, title or genre of the song.
